Poet Laureate
Opportunity

The City of Ripon is partnering with the Ripon Arts League in welcoming the opportunity to add to the rich cultural opportunity of our community by appointing a poet laureate. Residents living within the City of Ripon are encouraged to apply.

What is a poet laureate?

A poet laureate is an individual who is recognized as being the most excellent poet in a specific area, such as a country, region or state. The designation is typically granted through a governmental body or a literary organization within a government. The word laureate is derived from the Latin word laureatus, which means "crowned with a laurel wreath."

Poet laureate is an honorary designation that may include specific duties or responsibilities along with compensation in the form of a stipend. There is a great deal of status associated with being recognized for one's poetic talents at this level. Being honored in this way can lead to significant opportunities in literary circles and beyond.

Responsibilities

  • The Ripon Poet Laureate shall work with the Ripon Unified School District and/or Ripon Christian Schools to hold literacy events to bring poetry and the literary arts to the youth of the community.

  • Poet Laureate to compose one poem per year dedicated to the City of Ripon and read it at a City Council meeting.

  • Host team events such as spoken word events, poetry slams, or book clubs at the Ripon Library.

  • Host early childhood literary programs, including story time, at the Ripon Library.
  • Provide a free poetry workshop open to the general public at the Ripon Library.
